Destructive Behavior


...who finally gave up after taking a couple of markers and having nothing to show for them.

I was playing blackjack recently in Las Vegas casino next to someone who seemed to be heading to an early death. Every time he lost to a lucky dealer draw he would pop a couple of Tums and his face would get a darker shade of red. Yet he soldiered on raising his bets as he progressed through tough losses.

Beyond problem gamblers are the people who are, shall we say, just pain in the ass gamblers. They aren't creating financial or social problems for their friends and families. They don't miss work because they are out gambling too much. They just create health and emotional problems which make their own lives more difficult. These people seem to forget gambling is a recreational activity for all but a very few select players.

This dimension is exposed on the gambling vacation. Most take vacations to relax and recharge. Do you think those who get seriously worked up in the casino during vacation head home recharged? Probably not In fact many make others back home miserable regaling them with tales of tough losses and poor luck. 

This is often borne from those with a bit too much competitive spirit. In the past I used to visit Las Vegas with a day trader friend of mine. He claimed he couldn't win at trading if he didn't treat it like hand-to-hand combat with other traders. Now mind you when trading in markets, there are thousands of players and potential players. Seeking out one person to “beat” is a sure way to lose. However he claimed it was the only way he kept himself sharp.

When we hit Vegas, my friend just turned into a monster. He turned friendly games of blackjack and poker into more hand-to-hand combat. He would endlessly taunt other players in the poker room to the point they all just wanted to beat my friend. He pissed off so many pit bosses and dealers he was getting comped horribly for the serious action he was putting on the felt. When he left he was upset at himself for any mistakes he made and lamented any money he lost. Some vacation he had. 

How can this be an enjoyable time away from “reality,” which we all have to deal with already? Gambling is fun, it strokes senses most normally don't pay attention to except during jaunts to the casino. While gambling may not always be relaxing, it should be a nice escape from one's ordinary life. 

When you insist upon a destructive style for your gambling you are not only subjecting yourself to more stress, but you are robbing yourself of the chance to recharge. Further you are setting yourself up for continuing a negative mentality such as the one my friend has. Life isn't about battling it out every chance you get. 

Even worse, don't play for stakes you cannot afford. This is such simple advice, but how many times have you been out of your comfort zone while gambling in the last year? When you were in such a state, how much did your stress increase? 

Wouldn't it be better just to bet less, even if it means you bet more often or for longer periods of time? Betting smaller amounts and relaxing while doing so should be everyone's secret to enjoyable gambling.
