All of my attempts at clarification fall on deaf ears, so let's see if I can explain it in simple terms, which by the way, is the extent of my ability to explain.
Several months ago in a class in North Jersey, I was going over a system of betting on the double streets. I was telling the class to place 6 chips on the double street of 10 and 13, thereby picking up six numbers (10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15). A fellow by the name of U.R. Lyon was in the audience and immediately challenged my play. "Why should we put 6 chips on the double streets and get paid 5 to 1 for a total of 30 chips, when we could put one chip on each one of the numbers and get paid 35 to 1?".

I explained to U.R. Lyon that he was getting the same pay off, but he said I was lying, that’s like Dolly Parton ridiculing Elizabeth Taylor for being too top-heavy ... but that's another story.
It took me a full 20 minutes to get this dork to finally grasp the similarity of the pay offs. It's true, you get 35 to 1 if you play each of those numbers straight up, as opposed to a 5 to 1 pay off for the double street. But let's say number 13 showed and you had 6 chips on the double street. Your 6 chips stay there and the dealer pays you 30 chips. That is your profit.
