It amazes me how much the game of craps is being left behind in the casino market these days. Craps is the dormant giant of the gambling world, waiting there for players to discover the joys of rolling the dice and experience the thrills of a hot roll.

 Short of winning the rare jackpot on a slot machine or getting a royal in video poker, nothing can match the rush craps can give.

One of the keys which could lead to renewed interest in the game is the level of player participation.  For over a decade now players have gravitated to games which reduced player participation.  Machines of all kinds tend to take the personal touch out of the gambling experience.  People seem to prefer escaping reality instead of celebrating it in casinos today. 

The resurgence of poker and the popularity of “pit” games heading on an upward path makes it  possible that gamblers are looking to put more of an interactive touch back into their gambling. Craps has a relatively low house edge for disciplined players which makes it a game with a low cost to play.  What it does cost is well covered by the excitement it generates.

When was the last time you played blackjack or a slot machine and felt excited by the game itself?  Gambling rush, the thrill coming from the spin of the reels or the turn of a card, certainly exists in all casino games, but craps often takes it to another level.  It feels more like a game and not a battle against an impossible to beat opponent. 

Most of your fellow players are rooting for the same outcome and the emotional charge becomes infectious.  You don’t have to deal with the guilty feeling that comes when you catch a winning hand, but your neighbor loses his sixth straight hand.  When you do lose, others are there to commiserate with.  Craps brings a real sense of community lacking on most casino floors. 

Online craps gets supercharged.  The speed of the game brings more thrills, but of course less interaction with the others.  Online casinos with chat features produce some, but certainly not all of the thrills of the live game.  Still those hot runs will come at times and make you yearn for the day you can get back to your favorite table in your favorite casino. 

Either online or in a live game, craps should be learned by all.  If it doesn’t become your favorite game, it certainly serves as a good change of pace.  If you find yourself running badly at your favorite game, a craps session can recharge your gambling senses.  Cold games are easy to get away from and a hot game is always just a few rolls away.  Best of all you can start with a little and run it into a nice score with just a hot shooter or two.

In future columns I will discuss the game in more detail.  For those who don’t understand the game, it is quite easy to learn if approached properly.  Too many players believe it is too complicated to learn.  However when one focuses on the table layout one section at a time, it takes no longer to learn than other casino games.  Better yet, when learned from scratch you learn to stick with bets which offer decent value for your money.

Approach the game with a little patience and you will see how excitement at a reasonable price can be found in any casino once you learn how to play craps.
