One “leak” far too many players exhibit is the habit of chasing. Small losses turn into big losses when it comes to casino play when players lack good emotional control. My money management plan, built solely to control the gambler’s emotions, is a good first step, but what more can a player do...
...to stay in control? The surest way to control chasing is to exercise tight control how much money you start play with. Unfortunately online play makes it tougher to segregate how much you might want to risk, but once again casino gambling is a battle of control. Control yourself or the casino will control you.
When you start any session determine how much you need based on the strategy you use to attack the games you play and don't deviate by adding more later. This goes back to the concept of money management. Never start play with a buy-in bigger than your loss limit. In fact, most will handle a buy-in of half that amount better. If you lose half your loss limit by no means should you just keep playing. Are you getting “killed” at the game? Is nothing going right? Back off and take a shot later.
Ongoing assessment of how things are unfolding is important in almost any life activity. It is hard to imagine anything you would continue doing if you were getting your head handed to you, so why do gamblers seem to think nothing of a total beating they are receiving at the machine or the tables? Why do they open up their wallets to continue donating more?
Control over one’s mindset is so crucial in
gambling
. Think about how the casino manager feels when his tables or machines are getting beat by players. Rarely will a manager worry about the day's results unless he suspects cheating or something that isn’t quite right. If players are just getting lucky, he doesn’t deviate from his well-executed plans. The controlled gambler must do the same.
The controlled gambler has set out his expectations and goals. He knows what he will be playing, how much he will be playing, and what he will do faced with a number of different scenarios. Of course it all starts out with correct expectations of what he faces when playing in a casino. The fact that the house has the edge alone should alleviate any urge to chase, but realistically we all know chasing is tough to stop.
No matter what
game
you choose to play, I always preach preparation and control. You can’t practice how you will throw the dice or hold your cards and hope to change your results for the better, but you can come to the game prepared to keep yourself in control. Even people who play with an edge, top-notch poker players and sports bettors, need the same preparation.
Great poker players imagine every situation they might face. When they make great moves at the table it looks like an artist coming up with a brilliant maneuver from some sixth sense. In reality it came from practice, experience, and staying in emotional control while in the heat of battle. Put those three things together and you are prepared to play no matter your choice of game.
Just know what situations you might face and react the same way each and every time. Sometimes you will be facing adversity, but consistent play backed by preparation will give you the best chance to come out a winner and avoid disastrous losses caused by chasing.
