Anybody that loves the game of poker has probably thought about how fun it would be to become a professional. Turning pro is a goal that a lot of serious poker players share; unfortunately this is not an easy task to accomplish. If you want...
...to become a professional poker player there are a few things that you will need to do in order to get started.
First off, if you want to turn pro, you have to be good! Just like any other sport, the professionals are the best of the best. The only way that you will be able to become the best is to practice as much as humanly possible. Remember, the full-time professionals out there are playing 40 hours or more each week. If you want to join them you will have to work just as hard.
Also, before you decide to give up your day job, you will want to realize that turning pro can sometimes be very risky. If you do not win, you will not get paid. So again, you better be very good before taking on this task full-time.
When you become a full-time player, whether at the tables or online, you will no longer be playing just for fun. Sure, the game will still appeal to you, but you always know in the back of your mind that you have to perform at the top of your game day in and day out. When you are only playing five or ten hours a week you probably look forward to sitting down in front of your computer; it is a way of relaxing and forgetting about your day job. But when you decide to play 40 hours a week, your entire outlook on the game will change. The best way to decide if this is for you is to ask yourself if you can envision sitting in front of your computer,

, 40 hours a week until you retire. If you have any doubts, you may want to continue playing as a hobby only.
If you have already decided that you want to become a professional poker player you will need to know how to get started. The most important thing you can do is to assess your strengths, and try to sure up your weaknesses. By doing this you will be able to take your game to the next level. You will want to continually test yourself as a player, and slowly build yourself up from amateur to full-time professional status.
Becoming a professional poker player means that you not only have to have top notch playing skills, but you have to have mental toughness as well. There are times when even the best players in the world go through long losing streak. During these streaks you will be losing lots of money; if you cannot learn to fight through these times, professional poker is probably not for you.
Remember, poker is a game of skill. If you have honed your game and feel like you are ready to take it to the next level, you may want to turn consider turning pro. Think about it, there is no better job than a full-time poker player.
